Navigating Dependent Benefits: How Long Is My Child Eligible for Coverage?
As your children grow, keeping track of their insurance coverage can sometimes feel like a moving target. At Christian Schools International, we want to ensure you have all the information you need to keep your family protected.
A common question we receive from our participants is: How long is my child eligible for coverage?
It is important to know that the rules are not the same for each type of coverage. Please read the guidelines below carefully so you know exactly when your child may no longer be eligible under your current plans.
Eligibility Rules by Coverage Type
Health Coverage: Your child is covered through the end of the month in which they turn 26, regardless of their student or marital status.
Vision Coverage: Just like health insurance, vision coverage lasts through the end of the month in which your dependent turns 26, regardless of student or marital status.
Life Insurance: Coverage lasts through the end of the month in which your unmarried dependent turns 26.
- Dental Coverage: The rules for dental coverage are slightly different based on age and student status. Coverage lasts:
Through the end of the calendar year for unmarried children age 19 and younger.
Through the end of the calendar year for unmarried children ages 19–25, provided they were a full-time student at some point during that calendar year.
Important Exception for Permanent Disability: Across all plan types (Health, Vision, Life, and Dental), coverage may continue for unmarried children of any age living with a qualifying permanent disability.
What Happens When They Age Out? (COBRA Options)
If your employer is COBRA-eligible, your child doesn't have to lose their safety net immediately. A continuation of health, dental, and/or vision coverage is available for up to 36 months through COBRA once a child becomes ineligible for your standard insurance. All schools that participate in the CSI Insurance plan are COBRA-eligible employers
Important Deadline: You must request COBRA coverage within 60 days of the date your dependent becomes ineligible for coverage.
